actor jay baruchel

Some of you might remember him from Popular Mechanics For Kids back in the 90s, but these days Jay Baruchel is doing feature films like She's Out Of My League, Knocked Up, Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, and Tropic Thunder. He also starred in The Trotsky, and was nominated at this years Genie Awards. I was lucky enough to get a media pass to shoot the red carpet and chill in the press room during the show. When I put in my application, I asked if I could set up a light somewhere and shoot William Shatner and some people from Barney's Version and Splice. That was a no go, which I figured, but thought I would try. So I show up and shoot the regular red carpet stuff, then make my way to the press room, which only gets TVs streaming the broadcast, it wasn't actually in the auditorium hall. But the winners would come in after they win to speak a little and get their posed pics done in front of the Genie signage. No one huge came in, but near the end Jay comes in because he won the People's Choice award thingy. I take the regular shots, and as he's talking on the little stage to the media, I decide I'm going to try and get a shot of him as he's leaving, because he has to walk right by me to get to the door, by this kind of cool linear wall. I get a light out, don't have time to do much so I hand hold it, test it on a guy with his blackberry, looks ok. Jay finishes talking and walks my way with his escort. I stop them and ask if I can do a quick shot. He says okay, I place and pose him, take one with his award and two without, and then he goes wherever he's being rushed off to. I look at the back of the camera, I dig. Because the light was hand held I got this weird dark vignette on the left but I kinda like it. And he looked pretty slick in his suit, and I think it sorta looks like he's doing stand up because of the hard light. I also tried to shoot Shatner on an adjacent wall that was really space-like (would've been perfect for him), but he was the only one to exit at the other side of the room, so I didn't even get a chance to ask. Anyways, I was glad I went home with more than the standard media shots, and especially of someone I think is pretty cool. That and the free food made my night.

  1. enjoyed reading your blog - very nice work - the photo of Jay is AMAZING - I can see it blown up or left as the size above in a massive frame - really like the lighting & the background - my professor always dissaude us from using a tripod - very good.
